Resveratrol, the antioxidant rage! Can it reverse your biological clock?
It sounds like a lubricant you would use to grease your car, but in fact, resveratrol, is far from that. For the fitness radicals seeking eternal life and healthy lifestyles, Resveratrol is indeed a revitalizing substance, but not for vehicles. No! Its powers are used to invigorate those controlling the wheels instead!

With every sip of that delicious nectar, they profit from the delightful effects of the flavonoid Resveratrol, a natural element found largely in the skins of red grapes. A kind of antibiotic compound produced as part of a plant’s defense system against fungi and disease, Resveratrol claims to work its magical healing powers on the human body as well.
Scientists claim that a glass of wine here and there is good for the heart and blood circulation, but also urge in the same breath, not to overdo it. Binge drinking is not the answer and, instead of stopping the aging process, your wine abuse would only ruin your liver. Don’t worry; there are other sources of Resveratrol. The substance can also be found in eucalyptus, spruce, and lily, and foods such as mulberries, raisins and peanuts. As of late, it can also be purchased as convenient capsules.
Manufacturers advertize Resveratrol as an antioxidant, an anti-cancer agent, and a phytoestrogen or “dietary estrogens”. They also stridently claim their products increase cardiovascular health, energy & rapid weight loss. That raises the question: “Can it really?” Scientific researchers are still actively examining all the effects of Resveratrol, which in some cases, have only been tested on mice. Even though research results have been quite promising, how beneficial it really is to humans has not yet been fully determined.
Health-conscious individuals who are desperately trying to lose weight may take Resveratrol as a diet supplement. In other words, taking the substance as a powerful antioxidant can trigger receptors in your upper intestine to tell your brain you are full. As we all know, less food intake leads to less fat and weight loss.
At many laboratories around the world, the effects of Resveratrol on humans are still being examined. At this time, no concrete scientific evidence has been presented to the side effects of the naturally produced chemical. Therefore, scientists are hopeful that Resveratrol can be beneficial in areas such as:
- Cancer prevention
- Preventing cardiovascular disease
- Increased metabolic activity and enhanced athletic performance
- Weight loss and countering the effects of high-fat diets
- Age related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease
- Maintaining normal-range cholesterol levels
- Slow the growth of prostate tumors, which ultimately lead to prostate cancer
- Repair the physical damage made by normal every day stresses
While science continues to study how whole foods, antioxidants, fiber, omegas and other natural compounds benefit our general health, it makes an awful lot of sense to give our body what it naturally needs. Just make sure that you research new diet supplements and stop taking them if you experience negative side effects. When it comes to weight loss, remember, counting calories and physical activity have never hurt anyone!
